Shoplifting Charges
Together, there is not a criminal case our attorneys can’t handle.
Attorney Andy Cohen has committed his career to criminal defense. As a former prosecutor, Jill Polster knows how prosecutors think, and the evidence and arguments necessary to defeat criminal charges. This pairing of inside knowledge plus 25 years of criminal defense experience provides clients with the edge they need to defeat their criminal charges.
At Cohen & Hirsch, our attorneys are aggressive litigators. We stand up for our clients’ rights in court and do everything in our power to defeat our clients’ criminal shoplifting charges.
Located in Atlanta, our attorneys have successfully helped individuals throughout the state defend against misdemeanor and felony shoplifting charges.
Georgia Laws Regarding Shoplifting
Georgia courts take shoplifting seriously. The crime can be charged as a misdemeanor or a felony, depending on the value of the stolen property and the number of prior offenses. If the value of the stolen property is more than $500, you will be charged with felony shoplifting.
In Georgia, you can be charged with shoplifting for any of the following acts:
- Taking goods from any store or retailer
- Altering the price tag
- Transferring store goods from one container to another
- Interchanging the price tags between goods
- Wrongfully paying less than the store’s stated price for an item
Shoplifting is not a “minor” crime, and the effects of a conviction should not be discounted. The penalties for a misdemeanor charge include fines and possible jail time. If you are convicted of felony shoplifting, you face up to 10 years in prison.
In addition to the fines and jail time, a misdemeanor or felony conviction will leave a permanent mark on your criminal record. A criminal record can make it difficult to find a job or housing, and felony convictions will cause you to lose your right to vote and your right to possess firearms.
